Fall in New York

I have found this passage that I wrote last Fall and I thought that it reflects my state of mind so perfectly. I think my fascination with this season will never end.

What can I tell you about Fall in New York? I can most definitely tell you a story.

If I had to classify seasons in New York City, I would say that -

Summer is a young girl that is playful and very very young. The kind of young that likes to show off in front of her girlfriends on a hot summer day somewhere around Hamptons in her designer bikini swim suit. She is careless and free. She has the spirit of a wild animal. But still inexperienced, still in the anticipation what will her life bring in the upcoming years, upon graduation from college. She is the city away from the hot sweaty streets, somewhere in the outer boroughs that have beach and parties going on.

Spring is a tad older. She is still very young, but ready for that first love, for that walk hand in hand and for that first kiss at the sunset. The warmth of the early spring summer rays are so gentle, subtly working its way onto still cold earth. The first flowers are opening its heads to the observations of amazed gazes. Yes, she is the Love, she is delicate and gentle.

Winter is the grandmother. Cold but loving with a cracking fire place and hot chocolate, with a wool throw and knee high socks. With an interesting book and long evenings at home. She has stories to tell. She will test you with her strong winds, but reward you for your bravery with sparkling snowy mornings, and joy and cheer of the holidays coming.

Fall is my favorite Lady. She is sophisticated. She is confident and classy. She brings warmth and color. Fall is the ultimate New Yorker. It has the warmth of the Summer that is so fleeting, but yet still here with its warm rays of sun that bestow upon our heads. Yes, she is gracious and giving. Perhaps it is the last chance to lay down in the middle of Central Park before cold winds of grandma Winter will storm in and cover up the sun with clouds. Days will get shorter and all will be left in anticipation of the summer to come. But until that time she will show her true beauty. The beauty of many colors, the bright reds and yellow leaves that will stay on the trees and then cover the ground like the red carpet on the Oscar night. It is the time of that favorite cashmere turtleneck that could still be worn with a pip-toe shoes. She has the glamorous way of introducing herself to everyone, to make her presence known to the people. And everyone is mesmerized by her glorious beauty, by her playful colors, by her caring and caressing love.

There is more to it though, there are New Yorkers who embrace her Majesty Fall. A day in Central Park and you will see that the city is glorious. It is a non-stop celebration of Life and Beauty with its Twist competitions, Beer feasts, roller skating contests and just plain New Yorkers who are in true spirit of the City stay on still green and still warm lawns of the park with their books, friends, significant others. I am not sure if it was accidentally witnessed kiss, or the view of the city skyline peering on the outskirts of the park, as if it is trying to peek a view of what is going on. Or perhaps it is the overall spirit of those that live here. Those that comprise the substance of this great city, The City of New York. All of this combined is our Fall.

Nice to meet you Lady Fall we are Happy to have you here.

EPCNYC RELEASES ANSWERS TO MAYORAL QUESTIONNAIRE!

Here we go again. Why aren't the media and mayoral campaigns talking about
women's economic issues when half of NYC voters are women? The economic
status of New York City women is a critical "family pocketbook issue,"
especially in this economy. Yet it is being given short shrift by the
mainstream press, debate sponsors, and even the candidates. The New York
Women's Agenda and the Equal Pay Coalition NYC asked the questions and
received the answers on equal pay, part-time work, flexible work options,
childcare, access to new jobas and capital, and more. Go to
www.equalpaynewyork.org and pass this on.

The purpose of the questionnaire is to turn up the volume on these issues.
Otherwise, we can expect silence from the next administration. NYC women
cannot afford that.

"New York City voters now have a unique window on the future thanks to an
excellent questionnaire about how improving the economic status of women can
improve both the city's economic health and the economic security of
families. It was sent to all certified mayoral candidates by the Equal Pay
Coalition and the responses by Candidates Thompson, Bloomberg, Villar, Fein
and Dobrian tell an important story. Every New York City voter can now weigh
the answer to this question, "Which candidate has the best track record and
plans for the future to fully tap the strength of women, remove barriers and
open economic opportunity for all women?" said Linda Tarr-Whelan, Demos
Senior Fellow and author of the new book, "Women Lead the Way: Your Guide
to Stepping Up to Leadership and Changing the World"

The Equal Pay Coalition NYC (EPCNYC) is a consortium of over 35 civic
organizations, advocates and experts working together for Pay Equity in NY.
EPCNYC was created in 2007 by NYWA, a New York nonprofit charitable
corporation, in response to growing concern and mounting evidence of the
continuing economic discrimination suffered by New York's women and
minorities and their families. EPCNYCpromotes policy and legislative action
on all levels of government to create fair pay practices, and primarily
focuses its efforts on NY State and NYC Pay Equity reform. This nonpartisan
and nonprofit effort welcomes organizations and individuals who want to
identify with this fair pay campaign and work together to further these
goals.

Word of the Day – DOING – Points of You

Every day I am posting a word and ask you to respond to it, something about yourself, or something that you are working on, or your worldview, in 2 or 3 sentences through the words of the day. I look forward to your thoughts and ideas.

This is the 2nd game in a series of Games presented by FROG Enterprises and Points of You.

Please share you worldviews, introduce yourself and express your feeling through the following word.

DOING (Doing)

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game’s winning shot… and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” (Michael Jordan)

“We don’t have full control over the outcome, but we can influence it by means of consistent and correct actions!” (Yaron Golan)

(Quotes are provided by Points of You)

One learns the most by DOING. An action creates potential for achievement and positive change. You can only learn speaking by speaking, walking by walking, ect. Sometimes an action can tell you more about a person than a thousand words.- Lena Feygin

Psychological Portrait – A much needed information for the Job Search in current economy

In the ancient times, one would go to the fortuneteller to learn about the future events that will take place in his/her life, to learn what do, what the stars say about him/her as an individual. Today many of us still follow daily horoscopes and visit psychics. The validity of the information provided by such individuals is questionable, although I am sure there are a lot of people who will confirm the truth and accuracy of their psychic. (Why this happens is a whole different discussion that I will explore some other time)

With the birth of Psychology as a science individuals now have a variety of options to learn about themselves and to gain an understanding of their psychological portrait.

What is a Psychological Portrait (how do we present and understand it)?

The Psychological Portrait is a detailed explanation of ones’ Personality Traits (Qualities), Behaviors (Actions) and Tendencies (Potential).

Various tools (surveys and assessments) allow you to see who you are according to a specific guideline that these tools follow. In most cases data is statistically processed to compare your responses to a database of similar assessments, taking into consideration demographics (male/female, age group, Ethnicity, sometimes even geographic location such as your birthplace and current location, etc). Then the algorithm of a particular tool with a serious Psychological theory behind it provides results that represent YOU through the categories of the theory at hand.

Tip: Before taking an Assessment check the Theory behind it, to make sure that the typology this particular theory uses is something that you can understand and relate to.

If you have decided on an Assessment tool it is extremely important to answer the questions truthfully for an accurate evaluation. We all use little “white lies” during these assessments, not because we want to deceive anyone, but mostly because it is difficult to accept certain qualities within you and therefore you can make a choice toward a quality that you would like to have rather than the one you actually have. As a result you are looking at a report of you, as you want to be, rather than you as you are. It is very important to think about each question and answer based on the facts of your exhibited behaviors or emotions rather than what you think the answer ‘should’ be.

There are times when you are tested at a work place, or in college, or anywhere else, and in a setting like that there is a chance that you will answer your questions based on YOUR understanding of what it is expected of you. For example: If I am tested at a workplace and the statement is – “I can manage other individuals.” I would have a tendency to answer YES even if I had never managed anyone or did and didn’t like it. These responses take toll on the overall evaluation, due to the fact that most of the time these assessments are built so as to have a few questions targeting the same skill in various forms, not always visible to the tested individual. The accuracy of such a Psychological Portrait and a validity of it are questionable when given less than truthful responses.

As a Coach I am constantly faced with a choice; which Assessment tools do I use to help my clients create the most accurate Psychological Portrait possible? If you want to create the most accurate Psychological Portrait of yourself I have a few suggestions for you.

Do not just use one Assessment tool backed by a specific Psychological theory. I tend to create Psychological Portraits using 3 different Assessment tools backed by 3 Psychological typology theories.

1. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) – this is a recognized by the APA (American Psychological Association) Assessment based on the Typology theory of Jung and then further developed into an assessment tool by Isabel Myers and Katharine Briggs. This theory recognizes 8 different types of personalities presented as Dichotomies (in pairs) - Extraversion and Introversion, Sensing and Intuition, Thinking and Feeling and Judging and Perceiving, with overall 16 combinations. Each category is further broken down into 10 different behaviors with 5 specific to each group. Ex. Extraversion: Initiating (sociable, congenial, introduce people), Expressive (demonstrative, easier to know, self-revealing), Gregarious (seek popularity, broad circle, join groups), Active (Interactive, want contact, listen and speak) and Enthusiastic (lively, energetic, seek spotlight).

2. Strong Interest Inventory (STRONG) – this is another Psychological typology theory recognized by the APA that makes recommendations on your career choices.

3. Personality Definition Methodology (PDM) – A methodology developed in house here at FROG Enterprises, based on psychological theories of Prof. Ganzen and Prof. Tolkachev., of Saint Petersburg. This is a typology approach that identifies 8 types of intellect that are present in individuals: Logic intellect, Analytical intellect, Innovative intellect, Physical intellect, Visual intellect, Verbal intellect, and Intuitive intellect and Abstract/Musical intellect.

Use of these assessment tools allow me to create a realistic and accurate portrait of an individual, usually followed by an individual interview where information can be verified and expanded on.

Tip: If you are taking self-scored assessments, look for patterns in your results to draw a parallel for your own psychological portrait. If you have an opportunity, talk to a professional to get help interpreting the results of your evaluations.

Another important aspect of Psychological portraits is it becomes a very useful tool in your search for a new job. A well made psychological portrait allows you to first and foremost gain an insight into what it is that you want to do and what it is that you are good at, and it allows your potential employer to see if you are going to be a good long term fit with the company. Today more and more employers are implementing assessments into their employment practices.

Do you think psychological profiling is a useful tool for your individual use? For potential employer use? And should it be implemented as standard practice with Staff augmentation practices and HR practices?

This wonderful organization has developed an amazing Coaching Game.

How the Game is Played©*

The Game Includes:
65 cards - each presenting a topic depicted by a photograph
A book offering a selection of perspectives, insights, thoughts, questions and stories

About the Series of 65 Cards©*

The topics are divided into five series.

Journey ©*
The "Journey" series represents the central issues in the path through life that we all make. The cards in this series have a special meaning and signify that a large and powerful process is taking place in our lives at this time. A card from this series allows us to delve deeply into the story of our lives.

Doing ©*
The "Doing" series represents the sphere of action and reaction - the practical aspect of our lives. Cards from this series present us with topics related to the doing in our lives and the results of our actions, allowing u to take an in-depth look at our practical sides and the implications of our deeds and actions.

Just Be ©*
The "Just Be" series represents the being, the emotional and the flowing nature of our lives. A card from this series allows us to look at and examine the gap between what we feel inside and the way in which we express our 'beings' in the world around us

Difficulty ©*
The "Difficulty" series represents the challenging aspect of our lives. The cards in this series represent the difficulties and challenges we face along our journey, and allow us to closely examine the approaches and thoughts that guide us in our lives today, as well as how we cope with them.

Opportunities ©*
The "Opportunities" series is just that - an opportunity. The cards in this series represent the possibilities we have of enriching our daily lives; they allow us to examine our level of openness and readiness with regards to the things that are happening in and around us.

How are we going to play on-line?

Although this game has a "physical body" that we use in our groups, we are going to implement it on-line. How?

Every week we are going to post a word from each series and ask you to respond to it. Am I Conflicted? Duality within Self. http://ping.fm/Gw6Pd On a way to Self Discovery
Am I conflicted? Do I have two conflicting thoughts right here in my head and if so, why? Since the time of the great philosophers and free thinkers the human race has had doubts and questions as to the organization of the universe. Most of the time a question is born within you, it is incubated and nurtured until your mind is ready to analyze it and search for the ultimate answer, satisfying your thirst for knowledge and discovery. The most interesting discovery of all is the discovery of self. Who is that person that looks back at me in the mirror and why?

Today, we are going to start our discovery with a few assumptions.

Women for Hire

It was a brisk February morning, and it might have been quiet in a certain neighborhood but not around 7th Ave and 53rd Street in Manhattan. Women For Hire outreach event attracted over 5,000 women and men who attended in hopes to meet potential employers and speak with professional career coaches on the topics of improvement of their resumes.

I volunteered my time and experience as a Coach and reviewed resumes. The guidelines were simple, 5 minutes (or about) per candidate. When we started at 10 am sharp, the line for resume critique stretched out for miles. I reviewed resumes without breaks from 10 am to 3 pm. By the time I came out I felt tired but great. It is not every day you get to really make a difference in so many lives of others in such a tight time frame.

I wish best of luck to all of the participants and would like to thank Women for Hire for giving me an opportunity to contribute to this event.

As a follow up to this event, we have partnered up with Coaches to create a series of workshops focusing on career development and job placement assistance. Check back to my website www.frogent.com to follow the schedule and gather more information.
